[JAKARTA] As a country with the second largest living resources in the world, Indonesia has 30,000 species of plants, and 9,600 of them proved to be efficacious as a medicine. Unfortunately, these plants for medicinal use is still very limited.
Deputy Health Minister Ali Ghufron Mukti said this when opening a seminar in the series of National Health Day to-47, which was themed "Indonesia Love Healthy, Herb Contributing Time" in Jakarta, Wednesday (16/11).
Wamenkes say, the development of plants based on new scientific evidence focused on three types of herbal medicine that 6 types fitofarmaka, 31, 1400 standardized herbal medicine and herbal types. Limited development of medicinal plants is due to a number of constraints, including Indonesia still lack of research data about the medicinal plants.
In addition, the types of products and herbs are limited and weak mechanisms of traditional medicine. Education and training institutions for traditional medicine are still lacking, and the lack of experts in the field of herbal medicine.
Limited manpower or experts in the field of herbal medicine, for example, because during this medical approach in Indonesia received in the formal service sector is health care west ,, instead of traditional herbal medicine. Therefore we need a scientific data, that these herbs provide benefits, safety, and effectiveness for the recovery and healing of diseases more quickly.
"Furthermore herbs that have been scientifically tested, security, benefits and quality will be utilized to implement the health services in health care facilities," said Wamenkes.
Meanwhile, herbal medical clinics have also been developed in 12 teaching hospitals and clinics saintifikasi herbs developed by training 60 doctors clinic in Karanganyar, Sragen, Kendal and Semarang. This was followed by cooperation agreements between Development Agency and the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) to develop a body of knowledge of herbal medical services in Indonesia.
According Wamenkes, herbs can be used as a herbal remedy widely both for treatment or within the formal health services. In addition, herbs can boost economic growth and provide employment opportunities and reduce poverty.
Citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2005, about 80% of world population have ever used herbal remedies. In Indonesia, herbal medicine as part of herbal medicine / herb, has been accepted and is widely used by people in order to health care. While the data Riskesdas 2010 showed, there were approximately 59.12% of Indonesia's population never consumed herbs and 95.6% of them feel the herbs efficacious in improving health.
"This shows a shift towards the concept of public interest back to nature, as already developed countries like the United States," he said.
Meanwhile, Abidinsyah Siregar, Director of Health Services Traditional, Alternative and Complementary Health Ministry said, in 2012 approximately 50% of districts / cities in Indonesia in the health service is basically largely been able to provide integrated services between traditional and conventional.
"Do not just rely on drugs or injections, but also with the traditional. Not used for treatment but for recovery or accelerate the healing process, "he said.
In order for the herbs into a part in the formal health services, the knowledge of herbal medicine should flow into the world of education through curriculum. Every doctor who graduated already can determine the choice of treatment, whether conventional or traditional.
Indonesian doctors should have a more developed knowledge, the knowledge of the west and east, between the modern and tradiosional. This is now only a few are willing to make the medical faculty herbs as part of their education. For example, University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, University Hassanudin, Airlangga University and the University of Diponegoro. The medical faculty of education incorporate herbal medicine as part of the curriculum with only 2 Semester Credit System (SKS) extra. [D-13]
